Samuel Wayne Woods

September 1, 1922 — July 2, 2014

Samuel Wayne Woods, 91, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at his home. Born in Pennsylvania, Wayne has lived in Metter almost 70 years. A Marine and World War II veteran, Mr. Woods spent time stationed in the South Pacific supporting anti-aircraft artillery and helped defend the South Pacific Islands from invasion from the Japanese forces. He was a retired engineer of Derst Baking Company. In his later years, Wayne loved reading and gardening. He also enjoyed spending time with friends at the Candler County Concerted Services. He was a member of the Metter First Baptist Church and enjoyed fellowship with his church family. Wayne was a Shriner for more than 50 years.

Mr. Woods was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Smith Woods; three brothers, Clinton W. Woods who was lost at sea in a downed aircraft during World War II, Charles R. Woods, Robert McClellan Woods and a sister, Nora Woods.

He is survived by two step-sons and a step-daughter-in-law, G. Joudon and Sherry Smith of Bulloch County and Samuel M. Smith, Jr. of Savannah; two step grandchildren, Alicia and Justin Smith; a niece, Carol McCormick of Florida and a nephew, Buddy Owens of Savannah.

Memorial services for Mr. Woods will be conducted Monday, July 7, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Metter First Baptist Church with Dr. William Perry officiating. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Metter First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 34, Metter, GA 30439.

Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter is in charge of arrangements.
