Mildred Jane Waters Mikell, age 89, died on Tuesday, February 21st, 2017, at The Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro, Ga. She was  born in Brooklet, Ga on September 17th, 1927 to the Late Russell Waters and Hester Deloach Waters and was preceded in death by Elder John Shelton Mikell, her beloved spouse of 70 years and 8 brothers and sisters.
Mildred Mikell was a graduate of Brooklet High School and held the record for Highest Scoring Player in Women’s Basketball, a record that was not surpassed.
Mrs. Mikell worked many jobs in her lifetime. She began as a telephone operator in Brooklet and then Atlanta during WorldWar II. She later continued her work In Savannah as a telephone operator supporting the family as her husband attended college. Mildred received her LPN in her forties in Miami, Florida and worked as a nurse for many years.
Mrs. Mikell was known to always be at the right hand of her beloved spouse, Elder John Shelton Mikell. Together they faithfully served over 65 years in ministry in the Primitive Baptist Denomination. She was his constant companion and confidant in the ministry and the love of his life. Elder Mikell often credited Mildred to be one of the main avenues that the Lord used in his life to draw him to Himself and that her love for the church is what prompted him to begin attending church. She loved the Lord and his people.
Mildred Mikell was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.  She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, John Shelton Jr. and Erin Mikell of Goose Creek, SC; a daughter and son-in-law, Shera and Joshua Smith of Douglas; four grandchildren, Chantel (David) Hughes, Jason(Danielle) Mikell, Rebecca (Michael) Reynolds, Heather (Matthew) Medley; ten great-grandchildren, Isabella, Owain, Olivia, Eryn, Vincent, Brenin, Michael, Mills, Emma Jane, and Harper Jane; her sister, Maxianne Waters Smith of Port Royal, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Saturday, February 25, 2017 from 4 until 7 o’clock in the evening at Metter Primitive Baptist Church.

The funeral will be held Sunday, February 26, 2017 at Metter Primitive Baptist Church at 3 o’clock in the afternoon with Elder Mike Newman and Elder Bill Durrence officiating.

Interment will follow in Brooklet City Cemetery.
