Melba Mercer Lanier, 93, of the Ollifftown Community died Monday at the Candler County Hospital. Born in Candler County and a lifelong resident, she was the daughter of Joseph M. and Eula Mae Mikell Mercer. Mrs. Lanier was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting and collecting thimbles from all over the world. She was a member of the Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church. Family was her greatest pleasure and her home was the favorite gathering place. Preceding her in death were her husband, Reigh Lanier and a brother, Grayson E. Mercer.
Survivors are three daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Jack Newton of Millen, Judy and Archie Hendrix of Metter, Lesha and Greg England of Savannah; two sisters, Janell Watson of Augusta and Frances Rooks of Metter; two grandsons, John Newton and Joe Newton; five great-grandchildren, Joshua, Nicollette, Wesley, Austin and Peyton Newton; her caregivers,
Beth England, Barbara Montgomery, and Velma Hall; and her beloved cat, Cassie.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, 11:00 am, at Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Craig Lanier and Elder Sam Bowen officiating. Burial will be in the Rosemary Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Brian Rooks, Todd Foley, Landon Lanier, Galen Mercer, Bradley Mercer, Danny McGowan, Josh McCook, and Spencer Lanier Remembrances may be made to Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church, c/o John Newton, 4817 Hwy 121, Millen, GA 30442.
