Mabel Heigaard

Mabel Heigaard, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at her home in Metter.

Mrs. Heigaard was born on April 16, 1934, in Cochran, Bleckley County, Georgia to Hilton DeSoto Fowler, Sr. and Cora E. Smith of Cochran. She was a retired registered nurse.

Mrs. Heigaard enlisted in the United States Army after high school, serving honorably from July 15, 1955, through July 6, 1956. She attended the Southeastern Signal School at Fort Gordon, Georgia from October 1955 to December 1955, training as a Teletype Operator. Upon graduation, she was subsequently assigned for duty as a Teletype Operator to Fort Wadsworth, New York.

Mrs. Heigaard met her future husband, Arthur, while both were stationed at Fort Gordon. They married in Aiken, South Carolina on 20 December,1955 and were together for 64 years until his passing on February 12, 2020.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Heigaard, and her son, Arnold Heigaard as well as her sisters, Florence Smith and Memory Biggers and brothers H. D. Fowler, Jr. and Billy Fowler.

Surviving are her children, Arthur, Jr. (Renae), Allen, Carol, Anthony and Alex (Valerie) Heigaard; grandchildren Allen Heigaard, Jr. (Dani Phares-Heigaard), Sara Cuillierrier, Jonathan Heigaard, Rachel Heigaard (Will Westerman); and great grandchildren Tayla Mercer and Scarlett, Penelope and Malcolm (Mac) Phares-Heigaard.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 6 o’clock in the evening on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, in Metter.

The funeral service will be held Monday, April 14, 2025, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter.

Interment will follow in Lake Cemetery.
