Leonard Wood (Jack) Childs

Leonard Wood (Jack) Childs, Jr., 70, of Metter, passed away suddenly Monday, May 10, 2021 at Candler County Hospital in Metter.

Jack was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and was the youngest of three children born to Leonard Wood Childs, Sr. and Nona Needham Childs.  He lived in Knoxville until he was a junior in high school and moved to East Point, Georgia.  Jack graduated from Headland High School in East Point, Georgia in 1968.  He was a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and graduated first in his class having received a Bachelor’s Degree from the College of Industrial Management.  After graduation, Jack furthered his education studying law at the University of Georgia, was selected by the Secretary of State to attend a prestigious appointment at the Hague Academy of International Law, and then accomplished his Master’s Degree from George Washington University.

He first practiced as an Assistant Attorney for Chatham County, and then he continued to practice Environmental Law and Government Contract Law in Savannah Georgia for both the Corps of Engineers and later on in his private practice, Childs and Associates.  While in Savannah, he was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Savannah and in 2009, he moved to Metter.  Jack was a contributor for the Metter Advertiser, writing many columns over the years.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his wife Anne Hilderbrandt Childs; two sons and a daughter, Michael Rich Childs (April), Emily Childs Fisher (Mike), and Leonard Wood “Woody” Childs, III (Jenny); two step-sons and a step-daughter, Jim Hilderbrandt, Jr, Jeffrey Hilderbrandt (Tiffany), and Beth Hilderbrandt Phillips (Phillip); his sister, Carole Childs Fields (Tom); his brother, Ernest A. Childs (Karen); five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and the mother of his children, Kathleen Rich Childs.

The funeral will be held 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday and immediately following the service at the funeral home on Thursday. There will be no graveside services.
