Lana Funderburke Mccarthy

Lana Funderburke McCarthy passed away on Friday, January 14, 2022, in Savannah under Hospice Care.

Lana was born in Metter, Ga to the late Baxter Wilton Funderburke and Louise Wright Funderburke.  She was a graduate of Metter High School, where she was a cheerleader and a majorette. She was involved in all forms of dance and excelled in acrobatics.  She attended Middle Ga. College and Ga. Southern University.  She graduated from Ga. Southern with a degree in Elementary Education and Later added her Gifted Education endorsement to her credentials.

Lana taught in the Chatham County School System for 31 years.  She always felt teaching was her greatest achievement and followed her students to the present time.  She was known for attending graduation, weddings, and other special events of her former students.  She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Former students voted her into Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 2002, 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. Lana’s hobbies and pastimes involved ballroom dancing, gardening, flowers and entertaining her beloved dog, Tassie. She attended Compassion Christian Church and was a member of Metter First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her brother, Baxter Funderburke; sister, Sherry (Ronnie J.) Pope; niece, Mason Funderburke; nephews, Wil Funderburke, Wes Pope and Scott Pope and her pet, Tassie.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 17, 2022, from 6-8 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter.

The funeral service is Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter with Rev. Tom Osborne officiating.

Interment will be Lake Cemetery.
