Lamar “Hunk” Lanier, 88, of Metter, Ga, passed away on Saturday morning, June 15, 2024, at Southern Manor at Candler.
Lamar was born the son of Henry and Margaret “Maggie” Lanier in Candler County. In his early years of his life, he served his country as a member of the United States Army. Lamar was honorably discharged from an unfortunate football accident that took place while he was serving in Germany. That incident resulted in a broken collar bone that ended his career in the army. After Lamar departed from the army he moved to Savannah, Georgia. He became known in Savannah as “Happy.” Lamar worked as a train conductor for nearly 40 years at CSX Railroading in Savannah. After many years of residing in Savannah, Lamar moved back to Metter, and he has been a part of the Metter community for the past 20 years. During his time in Metter, more people came to know him by his nickname, “Hunk.” Lamar enjoyed being outside fishing and gardening. He was very talented at growing beautiful daylilies. He was also an avid sports fan. He enjoyed all sports including watching the Georgia Bulldogs. He was even known to cast a bet a time or two. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings Herman Lanier, Nell Roberts, Colleen Lanier, and Sybol Olliff Toole.
He is survived by his nephews, Stuart (Lisa) Roberts and Larry Roberts; a niece, Martha (Don) Farrow; sister-in-law, Wanda Collins; and several great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter.
The funeral service will follow on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 12 o'clock in the afternoon at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter
Interment will take place privately at a later date.
