J.R. Edenfield, 87, of Metter died Tuesday, January 01, 2013, at Cedar Plantation. The Candler County native and lifelong resident was the son of William Henry and Myram Addie Grubbs Edenfield. A 1943 graduate of Metter High School, he was an Army veteran of World War II. J.R. and his wife, Hazel, owned and operated Edenfield Grocery for 35 years. He was a master gardener and retired farmer but his greatest pleasure was being a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather. Mr. Edenfield was a member, former deacon and officer of the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Hazel Smith Edenfield; his parents and a sister, Eunice E. Williams.
Survivors are four sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Suzzane Edenfield of Savannah, Bill Edenfield of Metter, Stanley and Joanne Edenfield of Richmond Hill and Richard and Stacy Edenfield of Metter; a brother and sister, Jimmie O. Edenfield and Katie E. Lewis both of Millen; four grandchildren, Dawn (Tom) Weaver, Wendy (Jeff) Castille, Jason (Brandi) Edenfield and Justin Edenfield; five great grandchildren, Savannah, Shelby, and Wynn Weaver, Josh Castille and Ethan Edenfield.
Funeral services will be held Friday, 11:00 AM, at the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. James Bland, Rev. Blake Hicks and Rev. Gene Hiers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Visitation will be Thursday, 6-8 PM, at the funeral home.
