Joy Benton Hendrix, 88, of Metter, known as “Meme” to her family passed away peacefully on January 15, 2017 at her residence.

One of nine children , she was born in Kite, Georgia on December 25, 1928 to the late W.I. and Nellie
Benton.  She was a graduate of Swainsboro High School, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and Georgia Southern University.  Mrs. Hendrix was a member of Metter First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Naomi Sunday School Class.  She spent her career as a Teacher and an Administrator in the Candler County School System and was a charter member of Willow Lake Country Club, a member of Metter Garden Club, the Metter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Candler County Historical Society, and was a former Ms. Candler County.  She loved working in her yard with her flowers and cooking for friends and family.  Everyone who knew her, knew that she was dedicated to her family.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hendrix was preceded in death by her husband,
Roy Hendrix and her son, Roy Benton Hendrix, her brothers, Ottis, Bill, and Larry Benton; and her sisters, Billie McParland, Johnnie Newsome, Bonnie Strange, and Frosty Felton.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-laws, Luck and Billy Brown of Charlotte, NC and Faith and Mark Feldman of Peachtree Corners, Georgia; her sister Faye Hide of Atlanta; her grandchildren, Lanier (Ashley) Brown, Audrey (Scott) Dickison, Joseph Feldman and Hannah Joy Feldman; great-grandchildren, Wheeler, Effie, Logan, and Vaughn Brown, Billy, and Sidney Dickison; and several nieces and nephews.

Her family holds in high regards, her wonderful caretakers, Kay Tucker, Vernice Scott, and Johnnie Atkinson as well as Ogeechee Area Hospice.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 11 am at Metter First Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Dickison officiating and Rev Tom Osborne assisting.  Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour.

Interment will be in Lake Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, Charles Leverett, Randy Hendrix, Cliff Hendrix, Claude Felton, Forest Felton, Bo Benton, and Nicky Benton.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Naomi-Esther Sunday School Class.
