Joseph Ellis Dowd, 93, of the Hillview Community died Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at the Candler County Hospital. The Tattnall County native was the son of the late Joseph Raymond and Lora Collins Dowd. He was a 1940 graduate of Collins High School. Ellis was a B-29 pilot during World War II in the Army Air Corps. After the war, he received an Engineering degree from Georgia Tech through Armstrong College. He lived in Savannah during his career and retired as Director of Operations and Administration from the Georgia Ports Authority after 30 years. Ellis is a member of the Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
While living in Savannah, he was a member of the Metropolitan Dinner Club, Lions Club, Sotoma Club and the Tybee Light Power Squadron. He and his wife, June, traveled the Intracoastal waterways of Georgia, Florida and South Carolina and lived on Burnside Island for many years. After retirement, they moved back home in 1983. They loved RV'ing visiting every state in the United States except Alaska and also traveled to several European countries.
Survivors are his wife of 73 years, June Calloway Dowd of Hillview Community; a faithful sister-in-law, Norma Calloway of Jacksonville, FL; three nephews and a niece, Roger Calloway, Linda C. Waters, Jamie Calloway and Jody Calloway.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, 2:00 pm, at Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Lee Chambers and Elder Lee Price officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Jamie Calloway, Jody Calloway, Dustin Lively, Van Lynn, Gabriel Hodges and Trace Calloway. Deacons of Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers. Remembrances may be made to Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church, 2585 Cedar Creek Church Road, Collins, GA 30421.
