John Robert Bowen, 73, of Metter, husband of Jackie Taylor Bowen, died early Friday morning, October 28, 2016 at his residence.

Born in Bulloch County, he was the son of Barney Lee Bowen, Sr. and Jonnie Kent Bowen.  Mr. Bowen was a member of the Metter Primitive Baptist Church and was a 1961 graduate of Metter High School.  He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1966, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy.  After college, Mr. Bowen worked at Boney’s Drug Store in Claxton and, in December of 1969, he purchased Candler Pharmacy from Ottie Parrish.  He owned and operated the business until 2013 when his son Rob took over.  After his retirement, Mr. Bowen worked part time at Candler County Hospital. He loved his work and spending time with his family.  He was a Mason and a Shriner having been a member of the Metter Lodge #435 F&AM and the Alee Shrine Temple of Savannah.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowen was preceded in death by a son, Russell Kent “Russ” Bowen.

Surviving are his wife of fifty-one years, Jackie Taylor Bowen of Metter; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rob and Shelly Bowen of Metter and Reid and Brennan Bowen of Sonoma, California; his brother, Barney Lee Bowen, Jr, of Metter; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and R. E. Hendrix of Metter; and his grandchildren, Grayson, Colin, Nicholas, Sophia, Liam, Jack, and Aggie Bowen; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Saturday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Metter Primitive Baptist Church.

The funeral will be held Sunday, October 30, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Metter Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Mike Newman officiating.

Interment will be in Lake Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL  33607 or the Metter Primitive Baptist Church, P.O. Box 672, Metter, Georgia 30439.
