John Lester "Pops", Sikes, Jr., 87, husband of the late Annie Evelyn Findley Sikes, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Azalea Health and Rehabilitation. Born in Tattnall County, "Pops" was the son of John Lester Sikes, Sr. and Annie Mae Rewis Sikes and was most known for his incredible work ethic. As a young boy, Mr. Sikes worked in Florida with a paving company and later went on to join the Army Air Corps. He was a Veteran of World War II. In later years, Mr. Sikes met his wife, Evelyn Findley when he was attending Pine Grove Baptist Church and they were married in 1949 and lived in Metter since 1979. He worked as a truck driver with Great Dane in Savannah for several years and later with Sikes Brothers Paving of Metter. Mr. Sikes was a retired farmer and enjoyed gardening with his wife and keeping his yard neat. He loved family and family get togethers. He was a member of the Cedar Street Baptist Church. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Sikes was preceded in death by two sons, Timmy and Ricky Sikes and his sister, Judy May Powell.
John is survived by a son and daughter-in-law; Larry and Patty Sikes of Metter, a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Ricky Bragg also of Metter, a sister-in-law; Ginny Wallace Sikes Kemp, a brother and sister-in-law; Bill and Peg Sikes of Carrollton, nine grandchildren and their spouses; Jeffrey Sikes, Michael Sikes, Sandy and Brent Ponce, Susan Sikes, David and Brandy Sikes, Al and Jamie Sikes, Cori and Mike Reese, Logan and Courtney Jones and Jaeda Bragg and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 15, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Cedar Street Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Wilson and Rev. Casey Shaw officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5 until 8:00 pm also at the church. Pallbearers will be Dale Fordham, Eddie Jones, Larry Hadden, Clint Woodard, Ronald Cardell, and Ronnie Sikes.
