Joe Montgomery Abbott, 87, died Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro. He was born June 1, 1927 in Marietta, Georgia where he spent his early years before going into the army in 1945. As a 1944 graduate of Marietta High School, Joe attended Vanderbilt and North Carolina State Universities during his army years. Later, he attended the University of Georgia where he met his future wife, Nell Suttles Abbott. They married a year later and finished their educations at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Joe is survived by his wife, Nell, and their three children, Katherine Anne (Steve) Womack of Waxhaw, North Carolina, Joe Montgomery (Vaidehi) Abbott, Jr. of Davis, California and Martin Edward (Deborah) Abbott of Dallas, Georgia; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Joe spent his working years in the banking business. He was a graduate of the National Installment Banking School, University of Colorado. Before retiring to Metter, he served as manager of banks in Marietta, Cartersville, Albany and Athens, Georgia.

His church affiliations were Presbyterian in the various cities of residence. In the Marietta, Albany and Metter churches, he served as Ruling Elder. He was on the board of directors of The Lord's Day Alliance of the U.S. for several years.

From 1956-1963, he was a member of the Albany Kiwanis Club, acting as vice president for two years. In the Marietta Rotary Club, where he was distinguished as its 100th member, he served as president from 1978 to 1979. Joe was also an honorary member of Gridiron Society of the University of Georgia and an avid Bulldog fan for his entire life. From 1961 to 1963, he was active on the Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

A Memorial service will be held 2:00 pm, Thursday, July 31, 2014, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Rev. Joe Anderson officiating. Burial of cremains will be 10:00 am, Saturday, August 2, 2014, at the Marietta City Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Metter Presbyterian Church, 611 S. Lewis St., Metter, GA 30439.
