Jerry Mason Garner, 79, of Metter died Monday, January 25, 2016 at Candler County Hospital. During his high school years in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he was on the city boxing team and was a Golden Glove winner for three years, and served in the Navy reserves. In 1960, he graduated from Auburn University with an Industrial Engineer degree. While in Atlanta, he won tennis championships throughout the south east. Jerry was owner and operator of Buckhead Builders for 45 years. Upon moving to St. Simons Island several years ago, he started Island Builders. He moved to Metter in 2013 and was a member of the Excelsior Baptist Church. Jerry was preceded in death by a son, Mason Garner and his parents, Orlin Garner and Susie Wells Garner.
Survivors are his wife, Glynda Horne-Garner of Metter; daughter and son-in-law, Kristen and Steve Hershock of Jackson Hole, WY; four brothers, Louis Garner of St. Louis, MO, Roger and Larry Garner of Chattanooga, TN and Allen Garner of Atlanta; sister, Sally Peters of Chattanooga; grandson, Henry Hershock, of Jackson Hole, WY; Jerry loved his wife's family, Gail and Jalvis Motes, Jonathan and Paulette Smith and their children, April, Jamey, Polly and Will.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, 2:00 pm, at Excelsior Baptist Church with Rev. Justin Merritt officiating. Burial will be in the Excelsior Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Will Smith, Jimmy Braddy, Al Kemp, Jamey Motes, Jason Franklin and Christian Mercer. Honorary pallbearers will be the men members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.
