James M Jones

James M. Jones, 92, of Metter, husband of Martha Carden Jones, passed away late Thursday, July 22, 2021, with his family by his side.

Mr. Jones was born in Metter and was the son of James Lonnie Jones and Mary Bird Jones.  He graduated from Metter High School in 1944 and attended Emory at Oxford and later attended West Georgia College.  Mr. Jones graduated from North Georgia Vocational and Technical College, having studied photography.  In 1947, he married Martha Carden and they were married for seventy-four years.  He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the United States Marine Corps, and was a member of the American Legion, Post 108.  Mr. Jones was a Mason, and he established James Jones Photography and James Jones Insurance Agency here in Metter.  Mr. Jones was a Certified Insurance Counselor and a pillar of the community as he served in several organizations through the years.  He was a charter member of Metter Rotary Club where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Jones served on City Council in years past and was a columnist for The Metter Advertiser for many years.  Mr. Jones was honored as Candler County Historical Society’s Historian of the Year in 2007, and in 2002 he was named Candler County Citizen of the Year.  He was a member of Metter United Methodist Church and attended the Older Adults Sunday School Class and sang in the church choir. Mr. Jones was a leader of the Nursing Home Singers at Azalea Nursing Home for over thirty years.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by a son, James Lonnie Jones.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Carden Jones of Metter; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Elaine and Ed Boyd of Metter and Suzanne and Wiley Tyson of Metter; his grandchildren, Melanie Martin (Brian), Stephanie Boyd Anderson, James Trevor Jones (Michaela), Morgan Jones Rayman (Brooks), Jackie Jarvis Graham (Kaden), and Angel Jarvis; several step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, Matthew Martin, Lonnie Rayman, and Sierra Jones.

The visitation will be held, Saturday, July 24, 2021, from 5 until 7 o’clock in the evening at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, July 25, 2021, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Metter United Methodist Church.

Interment will follow in Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
