It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Alton Johnson, who left this life to walk the streets of gold on March 5, 2025, at the age of 79. Alton was an attentive, devoted, and loving husband to his wife Patricia Johnson for 30 years.
Alton worked at Brodie Meter Company for over 50 years before retiring. He also worked at Bevricks Char House Grill and Jomax for a short period of time. He loved working with the public, never met a stranger, and always had a smile on his face. He often said, “It doesn’t cost a dime to speak to somebody.”
For over 32 years, Alton was an active member of the Metter Church of God, where he served in many different roles. He served as clerk, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, men’s fellowship president, and choir member. For a period of time, he was the groundskeeper for the church as well; one of his favorite hobbies was working outdoors, from mowing the lawn to gardening. There was never a task too big or small when it came to his service to God.
Alton is preceded in death by his parents, James Osbert Johnson and Frances Parker Johnson, as well as his sister, Annette Miller, and his brother, Robert Johnson.
Until we meet again, your memory will be forever cherished and kept alive deep in the heart of your beloved and faithful wife, Patricia Beasley Johnson; children, Deneen Attebery (Joey), Timothy Johnson, Beverly Patrick (Ricky), Kimberly Berry, Daffney Berry, Brandon Berry, Joshua Berry (Crystal), and Caden Berry to which he lovingly raised and adored as his own son. Alton was also a proud papa to 14 grandchildren, who he loved dearly: Brittany Vedder (Michael), Richard Patrick (Jayci), Dalton Johnson (Leighann), Lyanna Moody (Vince), Alexis Holloway, Rayce Attebery, Ansley Lindsey (Caleb), Kyela Baker (John), Kylie Johnson, Kylie Aldrich, Kason Johnson, Jaci Berry, and Kinley Johnson. He also leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Patsy Johnson.
A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter is in charge of the arrangements.
