Jackie Taylor Bowen

Jackie Taylor Bowen, 76, of Metter, and widow of John Robert Bowen, died Saturday evening, August 8, 2020, at her residence.

Born in Candler County, she was the oldest daughter of Edward Jackson Taylor and Grace Johnson Taylor.  Mrs. Bowen was a member of the Metter Primitive Baptist Church and was a 1961 graduate of Metter High School.  She graduated from Georgia Southern College in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education.  In July of 1965, she married John Robert Bowen who she met in first grade. They lived in Athens, Georgia while Jackie taught nearby and they eventually moved back to Metter when the family purchased Candler Pharmacy in 1969.  She continued to teach in the Candler County area until having children.  Jackie was a voracious reader, took great pride in her sons, and loved spoiling her grandchildren. She was a wonderful wife to John Robert for 51 years until his passing in October of 2016.  In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Bowen was preceded in death by a son, Russell Kent “Russ” Bowen; a brother, Keith Taylor; a sister-in-law, Mary Hendrix; and brothers-in-law, Barney Bowen, Lynwood Kemp, and Sherrill Motes.

Surviving are her two sons and daughters-in-law, Rob and Shelly Bowen of Metter and Reid and Brennan Bowen of Raleigh, North Carolina; her sisters, Betty Kemp and Marie Motes both of Metter; her brother-in-law, R. E. Hendrix of Metter; and her grandchildren, Grayson, Colin, Nicholas, Sophia, Liam, Jack, Aggie, and Thomas Bowen; and several nieces and nephews.

The graveside funeral service will be held at 10 o’clock in the morning, Tuesday, August 11, 2020 in Lake Cemetery with Elder Mike Newman officiating.

The family will greet visitors immediately following the service at the graveside on Tuesday.
