Horace W. Shewmaker, 90, of Cobbtown, GA, husband of Dorothy F. Shewmaker for 64 years, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2018, of complications from Alzheimer’s.

Born November 23, 1927, in Harrodsburg, KY, he was the son of the late Calvin Mays and Lucille Bartholomew Shewmaker.  He was preceded in death by his brothers, John William Shewmaker and Calvin Mays “C. M.” Shewmaker.

Horace was a retired United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel.  He attended the University of Kentucky, the University of West Florida, and Georgia Southern College at different times in his life.  He experienced U.S. Army Service immediately following World War II in Korea, following the Japanese occupation of that country. He graduated from Air Force Pilot school in 1952 and flew combat in the Korean War and Vietnam conflict.  He served several years in the Strategic Air Command of the USAF.

After retiring with twenty three years of service, he was active in his community where he served Tattnall county as a property assessor, an adult tutor and a Cobbtown Lions Club charter member.  He was well read and was especially fond of astronomy and physics, and studying the specifics and origins of all religions. He enjoyed talking with folks about their beliefs and family traditions.

Along with his wife, Dorothy F. Shewmaker, Horace is survived by two daughters, Teri Shewmaker of Cobbtown, Dixi Thoreson of Lawrenceville, one son, Mark Shewmaker of Atlanta, two grandchildren, Kassi DerCola (Jeff) of Buford, GA, Simon Shewmaker (Megan Solko) of New York, NY, one great grandchild, Kohen DerCola, and other relatives in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Kentucky.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel with military honors and readings of his philosophy and thoughts on religion from an Agnostic’s viewpoint.  No flowers please, remembrances to the Library Fund of Pinewood Christian Academy or an Alzheimer’s related charity.

The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Sunlight Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Cobbtown Lions Club.
