Helen Elizabeth Powell Sparks, of Metter, Georgia, swung her way into Heaven on the 92nd hole of life on Thursday June 23, 2022, peacefully at home in her den. Helen was born in Lincolnton, Georgia on October 28, 1929 to Joseph and Almeta K.Powell.
Helen, most endearingly known as “Mema,” was a true Metterite at heart. She and Dr. Sparks moved to Metter in 1955. They were the beginning of golf and the Willow Lake Country Club in Metter and inspired a love of the game that has been passed down for generations. Through the years she made Christmas merrier with her famous eggnog and considered everyone that walked through her door family. She loved life and she sure loved a party.
Preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Henry Conklin Sparks Jr., daughter Suzanne Nascimento, sister Alicia Powell Martin, brother Joe Gray Powell, and granddaughter Amy Sparks Julien.
Survived by brother Eugene Powell of Lincolnton, Georgia, sister Susan Blackwell, sons Joseph M. Sparks and Henry C. Sparks III. Granddaughters Kristin Hammett, Kandice Ferris, Julie Batchelor, and grandsons Joseph Sparks Jr. and Ryan Sparks. Also survived by great grandchildren Alyssa Julien, Payton Hammett, Tucker Hammett, Evelyn Mae Ferris, John Henry Ferris, Tyndall Batchelor, and many nieces and nephews.
The graveside service will be held at Lake Cemetery on Monday morning June 27, 2022 at 10 a.m. To honor her wishes, please consider wearing your comfortable, summer party attire. Visitation will be held at the Kennedy Funeral Home, Hooks Chapel on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m.
