George Oscar Franklin, III, 79, of Metter died Thursday, November 19, 2015, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah. A lifelong resident of Metter, he was the son of George Oscar Franklin, Jr. and Katherine Brett Franklin. George was a graduate of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia and attended Georgia Teachers College (GSU) and the University of Georgia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Germany. After his father's death, he became owner and operator of Metter Auto Supply for many years. He later worked for Georgia Power at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro. George retired in 2011 from the Georgia Department of Transportation after 21 years.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Jimmy Franklin.
Survivors are his wife of 52 years, LaRose Kirkland Franklin of Metter; a son, George O. Franklin, IV of Gulf Shores, AL; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherri and Billy Patterson, Traci and Jay McCranie all of Metter; six grandchildren, Blake, Brent and Carli Patterson, Lexi, Liz Anne and Lucas Hadden; and two step-grandchildren, Cody and Jacy McCranie.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, 2:00 pm, at Metter Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Mike Newman officiating. Burial will be in the Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday evening, 5:00-7:00 pm, at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel. Pallbearers will be Kelly Williams, Ricky Stanford, Billy Sutton, Dale Fordham, John Miles and Ernest Franklin. Guest book: www.kennedyfuneralhomes.com.
