Freida Funderburke Lloyd, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Belvedere Commons in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. She was born in Cobbtown, Georgia, the daughter of Baxter and Mittie Funderburke. Freida was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Coleman Lloyd; son, Glenn Allen Lloyd; and brother, Wilton Funderburke.
She is survived by her daughter, Gwen Moseley and son-in-law William of Enterprise, Alabama, granddaughter, Amanda Moseley Steady (Scott) and great-granddaughter, Sophia of Atlanta, Georgia. Survivors also include two sisters, Dorothy Shewmaker (Horace) and Melba Funderburke of Cobbtown, Georgia; nieces include Sherry Pope (Ronnie) of Statesboro, Georgia, Teri Shewmaker of St. Petersburg, Florida, Dixi Thoreson of Lawrenceville, Georgia and Lana McCarthy of Savannah, Georgia; nephews include Baxter Funderburke (Marsha) of Metter, Georgia and Mark Shewmaker of Atlanta, Georgia.
Freida received her Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University) in Statesboro, Georgia, and her Master's Degree from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida. She was an elementary school teacher for 45 years. The last 26 years of her career, Freida was an elementary learning disabilities teacher in Okaloosa County, Florida. She was the program director for 25 years of a tutorial program using volunteers to assist students with learning disabilities. Freida received numerous awards for her teaching and leadership skills. She received the Fort Walton Beach Woman's Club honor as Educator of the Century in 1992 and is listed as an outstanding teacher of America.
She has co-authored two books on the principles of teaching reading. After her retirement in 1992, Freida worked as an adjunct professor of education for the University of West Florida. Freida was a member of Cinco Baptist Church, Fort Walton Beach, Florida and taught Sunday school at that church for over 30 years.
