Dan Parrish, Jr.

Dan J. Parrish, Jr., 81, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at home under the care of Gentiva Hospice and Ms. Faye Williams.

Dan was born in Metter, GA on May 11, 1935, to Mildred Anderson and Dan J. Parrish, Sr. and spent his early years in Savannah. The family moved to Metter in 1948, and Dan graduated from Metter High School in 1953.  He was a math major at Georgia Tech, graduating in 1957. After serving in the United States Army in Germany, he worked with Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta, GA. He received his Master of Business Administration from Emory University and worked in marketing research with the Coca- Cola Company in Atlanta.

In 1972, Dan and his wife, the former Wanda Brantley, returned to their hometown of Metter where he was vice-president, secretary and a member of the board of directors of Metter Banking Company and First Bulloch Bank (later merged into BB&T). He served on the board of directors of Willow Lake Golf Club, the Metter-Candler County Planning Commission and the Woodpecker Trail Advisory Board. Dan contributed to many activities in his community, including Metter Athletic Boosters and the Dan J. Parrish, Sr. Golf Classic.

Dan was a great fan and supporter of Georgia Southern Athletics, serving on the board of directors and executive committee of Southern Boosters Inc. (now GSU Athletic Foundation). He was recognized in 1999 by the Georgia Southern Alumni Association as a Friend of Georgia Southern, and in 2004 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Southern Conference.

In addition to his wife, Dan is survived by a daughter and her husband, Pamela and Hugh Tanner; two grandchildren, Alexander and Paxton Tanner all of Houston, TX; a sister-in-law, Pam Brantley and Bill Mercer; two nephews, Bond McLendon and his wife Melissa and their children, Helen, Vivian and Jesse all of Claxton, and Mike McLendon and his wife Christie and their children, Matthew and Kate all of Metter.

Dan’s memorial service will be held Saturday, July 16, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Metter Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Mike Newman officiating. The family will receive visitors from 10 until 11 a.m. at the church. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of Metter High School Class of 1953 and their spouses and former officers, directors and employees of Metter Banking Company.
