Billy Bird

William Jennings “Billy” Bird, of Lake Oconee and formerly of Metter, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Northside Hospital in Atlanta.

He was the only son of Ulys Bird and Thelma Marthers Bird Collins Turner.  Billy was a 1964 graduate of Metter High School and attended college at Georgia Southern University where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration.  He then attended Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in Cincinnati to obtain a license as Embalmer and Funeral Director.  When Billy and Vicki moved back to Metter from Cincinnati, Billy began work at Taylor Funeral Home with his father-in-law, Colon Taylor.  Years later he would become a partner at Taylor and Bird Nursing Home, Inc., from which he retired in the late 1990’s.  He was the President of the Willow Lake Golf Club from 1988-1992. After retiring Billy and his wife Vicki moved to Lake Oconee and have lived there for the past several years.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, watching Nascar racing and westerns. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by a son William Jennings Bird, Jr.; and a daughter, Robin Victoria Bird.

Surviving are his wife, Vicki Taylor Bird of Lake Oconee; a daughter, Dana Bird of Cumming; his grandchildren Nicholas and Ava of Cumming; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday, August 16, 2024, from 6 until 8 o: clock in the evening at Kennedy Funeral Homes of Metter.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon at Metter First Baptist Church with Rev. Randall Smith officiating.

Interment will follow in Lake Cemetery.
