Alton Slater

Alton Slater, 84, passed away Sunday, December 22, 2024 at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro.

A Cobbtown native, Alton and his wife, Vina Faye lived in Metter for the past 23 years. A machinist by trade, Alton loved working with his hands. He retired from Briggs and Stratton about fifteen years ago. He was a small business owner of a company that operated a sawmill and a wholesale florist supply. Alton was a member of The Young Farmers Association and The Cobbtown Lions Club. Alton also served in the Georgia National Guard. He loved fishing and woodworking, and thoroughly enjoyed, “yardsaling”, and plundering in thrift stores. Alton adored spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was of the Baptist faith and attended church regularly with his wife Vina Faye. He was faithful to read his Bible every day. He was preceded in death by his parents, Troy and Essie Mae Futch Slater; two brothers, Charles Slater and Olin Slater; two sisters, Helen Rogers and Annette Branch.

Alton is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Vina Faye McKinley Slater; Three Daughters, Donna Phillips of Dublin, Cynthia Reese (Ricky) of Soperton and Donna Montgomery (James) of Virginia Beach, VA; a Brother, Glen Slater (Barbara) of Cobbtown; Five Grandchildren, Kate Reese, Amelia and Tess Montgomery, Andrea Vaughn and Ashley Ramirez; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 27, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel with Rev. Doug Weisel and Rev. Johnny Beasley officiating.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 26, 2024 from 5-7:00 PM at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel.

Interment will follow in the Sunlight Cemetery in Cobbtown.
